STEP 1: GET ON THE AIRTRAIN FROM THE AIRPORT
Once you get out of your gate and walk through the airport follow signs for the AirTrain. It is on the upper level close to the security checkpoint. There is a big sign that says AirTrain. You can't miss it!
STEP 2: BUY YOUR NJ TRANSIT TICKETS
There are ticket machines right after the big sign/entrance and you can use cash or card to purchase your ticket. You can also get tickets right before you go onto the AirTrain if you keep going up the escalator but I would advise to get it at the first machines, just in case there is a long line at the other one.
If you are coming back to the airport I recommend buying the return trip as well so you don't have to waste time getting the ticket on the way back. You never know if you will be running late or what may happen so having the ticket ready to go will save you time and stress.
When buying your ticket you will be prompted to put in your final destination and that is how they will charge you. I paid $30.50 for a round trip since I was going to NYC Penn Station. Price will differ if you are going somewhere else!
STEP 3: HOP ON THE AIRTRAIN
Hop on the AirTrain so it can take you to the Rail Station where you will get on the NJ Transit train that takes you to NYC Penn Station. You will need to scan your ticket here to pass through but hold onto your ticket because they may check it once you are inside the train. They didn't check mine going to NYC but they did check it on the way back.
STEP 4: GET OFF AT NEWARK LIBERTY AIRPORT STATION
Get off here! The station will be after stop P4 in the map above. You will know when to get off because this is where other people will get off. I made the mistake of not getting off here because the attendant told me to get off the "last stop" and I didn't know this was the last stop because it came by pretty quickly and didn't really know what was going on. The guys who were in the AirTrain with me kindly gestured for me to go before them but I stayed on it. It took me backwards to the terminal but I only lost about 5 minutes so it was fine. LOL
STEP 5: GET ON THE NJ TRANSIT TRAIN
You can look at the train timetables to know when the next train is coming and which track it will be arriving at. Like I mentioned before, keep your ticket handy because they do come around and check your ticket. Your trip will take around 40 minutes once you are on it. The trains stop at Newark Penn Station and may also stop at the new Secaucus Station. Stay on board to reach New York Penn Station at the next stop. Do not confuse Newark Penn Station with NYC Penn Station!
STEP 6: ARRIVE AT NYC PENN STATION
